March 1 2024

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Hello Everyone,

We were happy to share with you on Wednesday that our Outbreaks in the Home were all over. We are being advised by KFLA Public Health of the rise in enteric symptoms in the community (nausea, vomiting and diarrhea). Please ensure you are being very diligent with washing your hands and using hand sanitizer.

Resident and Family Satisfaction Survey:

Later in this newsletter we have shared the results of the survey that closed December 1 2023. Please take a look so you can see what we are working on.

Activities Coming Up:

You will find a number of new activities on the calendar for the month of March. The activation department (along with some great help from a number of residents) have been working hard at creating some great life size games for all to enjoy!

GREAT NEWS!

We were successful in our grant application through New Horizons for Seniors to receive $24,000 to build a paved walking path in our backyard! Stay tuned as these plans unfold! We will be looking to do some fundraising for a gazebo and park benches to have along the path.

This will very likely be a two phased plan that will allow us to extend the path farther in 2025!

Total Eclipse:

Have you heard about this rare celestial event happening on Monday April 8? Napanee is in a perfect location (also known as the path of totality!) to see the total eclipse of the sun as the moon passes between the earth and sun. This is expected to start at 2:04pm and last about two and a half hours. The sun will be fully eclipsed at approximately 3:20 to 3:23pm. We are in the process of developing plans for this pretty spectacular sight!

If this is your first time reading our newsletter, I would encourage you to go to this link where you will find the previous newsletters should you wish to view them.

Should you ever not want to receive these newsletters, please follow the prompts on the newsletter at the bottom to unsubscribe.

Also, if you ever feel that you would prefer to not have a picture of your loved one or changed your mind and would like to have your loved one included in our Family Newsletter, please reach out to Bobbie-Joe at bblackburn@lennox-addington.on.ca or by calling ext 7224.

IPAC Education for Designated Essential Caregivers

IPAC Education that is required for all Designated Essential Caregivers

The Fixing Long Term Care Act states that we are required to provide specific IPAC related education to our Essential Caregivers. We also need to be able to demonstrate that we have provided the education, and that everyone has participated / received it and that it met your needs as it relates to IPAC knowledge.

Here is the YouTube link to the video prepared by Public Health that covers all the required content.

After watching the video, please complete the quiz found at the link here.

As always, we are happy to help you with this if you are struggling to access the link or would prefer to complete a hard copy.

Please speak with Colleen at reception and she will direct you accordingly.

NOTE: Click here for the form to complete if you want to be a Designated Essential Caregiver (This needs to be approved by the resident themselves or the POA )

Resident and Family Satisfaction Survey

The results are in and posted from the Satisfaction Survey. This wrapped up on Dec 1 2023 and after going through all of the results we are sharing them with you now. We experienced a decline in family participation this year with only 28 surveys completed. However, we saw an increase in resident participation with 56 residents participating.

As in previous years, we look at the scores that have a satisfaction rate of 80% or less.

Here are the Family Satisfaction Results below:

And Here are the results of the Resident Satisfaction Survey....

We have met with Residents regarding both of our areas of opportunity. The first opportunity relates to occasions where we struggle with staffing and residents aren't able to be assisted at their usual time. The second opportunity relates to occasions where residents wander into another resident's room or may pick up items that don't belong to them.

More to come on our next steps regarding these items.

Guest Meals

Meal tickets are available (for Non-Outbreak Home Areas) from Colleen at the reception desk Monday - Friday during business hours.

You do need to book the meal that you plan to attend at least 24 hours in advance (if the meal is for the weekend, it needs to be booked by Friday at 4 pm).

You will be set up in the Gibbard Dining Room with your resident. Lunch is served at 12 pm and supper is served at 5 pm.

Coffee Houses

Family Council has created "Coffee House" donation boxes for our hot drink areas. Please feel free to help us cover the costs of providing these hot drinks while you visit with your loved one.

Palliative Care vs End Of Life Care

The term "palliative care" is often thought to mean care provided to people in only their final days and hours of life.

But did you know that people with any life-limiting diagnosis, including dementia, can benefit from a palliative approach to their care for many years?

Palliative care is a general approach that prioritizes symptom management and an individual's quality of life. Receiving palliative care does not prohibit an individual from seeking life-prolonging treatments, or treating infections- the two can co-exist. In fact, research has shown that individuals who have a palliative approach to their care initiated early on in their disease progression actually live longer than individuals who do not!

The Fixing Long Term Care Act (2021) actually added Palliative Care to the Resident's Bill of Rights, stating that every resident living in Long Term Care has a right to care and services based on a palliative care philosophy; that is, care that prioritizes helping them live the best quality of life possible for the time they are with us.

If you have any questions about a palliative approach to care, please let the nursing staff on any RHA know, and I would be happy to connect with you.

And stay tuned for the next newsletter, where we will discuss end-of-life care and the many ways it is different from general palliative care.

Resident Home Areas -
Who to call when you have Questions?
Email is not your best option....

It is not recommended to utilize email if you are needing to speak to a registered staff member (Team Leader, Charge Nurse (RN or RPN).

Your best option is to call them per the numbers listed below.

You never know if a Registered staff person has vacation time, days off, or for whatever personal reasons are not on duty therefore causing an unintentional delay in responding to your question / information.

The RPN (Charge Nurse) is a great person to connect with if you have questions related to medications, health status updates, or general resident-centered information.

This is the best person to start with.

If they are unable to answer your question, they will be able to direct you as to

where to go next.

The RN Team Leader extension is an option if you are having difficulty accessing your respective home area or have further concerns.

If following speaking with the RN Team Leader, you continue to have questions or concerns, please reach out to

Angela Richmond RN who is the Assistant Manager of Nursing (ext 7226) or

Emily Sarley RN who is the Manager of Nursing (ext 7227).

The reminiscing baking program includes getting the story behind the recipe; baking it a few times so we have enough; then, serving it at nourishment time to all the residents. PSW's and Dietary staff are provided with the story behind the baked good as a great conversation starter with residents!

Absences from the Home

Please ensure the Charge Nurse knows in advance if a resident is going out so that medications can be arranged as needed. Also ensure to sign the resident out for their leave of absence. The sign out book is located at the team center on each Home area.

All residents (unless they are isolating), can go on social, day and overnight absences.

If a resident has a known exposure to a case while on their absence, please inform the Home ASAP. This timely notification will help us ensure the safety of all residents that may be affected (ie tablemates, roommates, etc)
